Architectural Review Appoints 8th Editor in 108 Years

7th December 2004

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Paul Finch, Editorial Director of Emap Construct and the current acting-chairman of the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, as the new Editor of The Architectural Review. Paul will succeed Peter Davey to become only the 8th -ever Editor in the AR’s entire 108-year history, following Peter’s well-earned retirement in February 2005.

Paul’s impressive career in architectural journalism spans several decades, initially at Building Design and the Estates Times through the 70s and early 80s, as Editor of BD in the 80s and early 90s, and latterly as Editor of The Architects’ Journal from 1994-1999, and Editorial Director of Emap Constructs’ architecture titles from 1999.

In addition, he is acting chair of CABE, sits on various RIBA committees, co-edits and publishes the quarterly magazine Planning in London, is a visiting critic of the Bartlett School and the Architectural Association, and has sat on the jury of various architecture awards including the Stirling Prize. He was awarded the OBE in 2002.

We firmly believe Paul’s outstanding and wide-ranging experience makes him the ideal person to drive The Architectural Review forward to the next stage of its development, deepening its position as the world’s only truly global architectural magazine, and helping to fully-realise its international ambitions. Equally, his strong existing relationship with the AR gives him an incredibly deep understanding of the magazine’s history and unique role in worldwide architecture.

Jonathan Stock, Publisher of The Architectural Review and The Architects’ Journal, said: "The AR is already the world's most respected architecture magazine thanks to Peter Davey's outstanding leadership. I look forward to working with Paul to build on that legacy to make it not only the most respected but the most widely read architecture magazine in the world."
