MATCH Magazine Celebrates 25 Years
2nd September 2004
Emap Active’s best selling weekly football magazine MATCH is 25 years old on September 6th, and it’s current fortunes are every bit golden as the footie heydays of 1979.
MATCH is now Emap’s fastest growing consumer title, and publisher Alan Morrison predicts a bumper abc increase when MATCH’s annual figure is released in Feburary 2005
“The phenomenal growth we are currently achieving with MATCH is testimony to the skill of the editorial and marketing team, who have an incredible understanding of their consumer, coupled with the ability to produce an exciting package for footie mad youngsters week in, week out. Current sales are surpassing our expectations.”
Back in 1979, MATCH featured a fixture list for the then first division, which included Bristol City v Ipswich and Spurs v Brighton. Chelsea were in the old Second Division and current Premiership team Portsmouth were in the Fourth Division. An all-star team of MATCH columnists included Brian Clough, Jimmy Hill, Osvaldo Ardiles, and the iconic Kevin Keegan.
Kevin Keegan remains a huge fan of MATCH and comments:-
“I am delighted to see MATCH celebrating its 25th birthday. I can remember appearing on the cover of the first-ever issue back in 1979, as well as writing a column in the magazine. Lots of football magazines have come and gone in the last 25 years but it's great to see MATCH still going strong. I'd like to wish it a happy anniversary and all the best for the future."
Simon Caney, current editor of MATCH is enjoying the nostalgia surrounding the 25th anniversary, whilst keeping his eye on the future:-
“MATCH is a completely different brand these days, because we are appealing to a much younger, but very clued up audience. We understand what’s important to them, and talk to them in a language they understand. That’s why we are achieving so much and that’s what we will keep on doing.”
