PC Plus launches world’s first computing magazine for mobile phones
9th June 2004
Future Publishing’s PC Plus magazine has today unveiled its pioneering new initiative, the world’s first-ever computer magazine delivered exclusively to java-enabled mobile phones.
The new ‘PC Plus – mobile edition’ is delivered free-of-charge direct to registered users of Three O’clock, - a mobile entertainment company that delivers mobile magazines to java-enabled mobile phones via their portal (http://www.threeoclock.com).
Three O’clock has already delivered magazines to over 100,000 users internationally, and currently offers six magazines from their portal. The launch of ‘PC Plus- mobile edition’, the sixth magazine available is the first provided by a dedicated publishing company and will be joined by other titles to be announced shortly.
The PC Plus - mobile edition will feature around 250 words per page, complete with full colour images, but avoiding video footage to keep downloading times to an absolute minimum. Taking the lead from the printed version of the magazine, the mobile edition will cover the latest in computing news, alongside reviews and technology specials.
Registered users will receive the mobile edition of PC Plus the same day as the monthly magazine hits newsstands:
“PC Plus is delighted to be pioneering this revolutionary new method of delivering magazines,” says Ian Robson, Editor of PC Plus. “We are actively evaluating the technology and have designed a special standalone edition of PC Plus that offers a flavour of what our print edition readers get every month.
“This brand extension could reap massive rewards for PC Plus – not only can it increase awareness of the title, it could also increase readership of our 260-page print based edition. The potential for this technology is that we can deliver a version of PC Plus to the millions of java-enabled mobile phone users around the world wherever they can receive a signal - a mind boggling, yet amazing thought.”
Future is also testing the world’s first paperless consumer magazine ‘BroadbandNow!’ delivered to broadband users in a PDF-based format – the new title offers live video and audio alongside the company’s passionate editorials, and contemporary magazine design principles.
