President Bush Named Best Villain in A Film

27th October 2004

President beats bone-fide baddies to bag Total Film magazine gong

Whilst hardly the result his advisors are hoping for, US President George W Bush has won his first victory of US elections week – having been named ‘Best Villain in a Film’ by thousands of UK film fans.

The US leader won the award for his unintentional involvement in Michael Moore’s headline grabbing documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 – beating a plethora of bone-fide baddies to grab the first gong announced from the UK’s Total Film magazine first ever Reader’s Awards.

Beating some horrible characters to the gong, real-life danger man George W Bush took on heavy-duty challengers, including Spiderman 2’s evil atomic scientist and mega-lo-maniac Dr Octopus. Played by British actor Alfred Molina, the frightening metal-tentacled madman did his best to wreak havoc on the world – much like President Bush himself.

The 43rd US president was also deemed a better bad guy than fellow Texas resident, the human flesh eating Leatherface – and also eclipsed swamp dwelling Lord of the Rings character Gollum (Andy Serkis) and eye-patched wearing deadly assassin Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah) from Kill Bill to grab the award.

Total Film editor Matt Mueller said: “We were being a little bit tongue in cheek when we shortlisted President Bush for Best Villain in our Readers’ Awards, but the overwhelming response of our readers – voting Bush top villain – just goes to show how frightening people found Bush in Fahrenheit 9/11.

“He was absolutely terrifying in that film. The infamous scene where he’s informed about the Twin Towers attack while visiting a school, and sits there absolutely paralysed, is enough to strike fear into anyone’s heart. This man is supposed to be leader of the Free World!”

Almost 10,000 film fans took part in the poll, by post and online, for a series of 19 Total Film Readers’ Awards.

The awards can be seen in the next issue of Future Publishing’s Total Film magazine, which goes on sale on November 4.
