SFX magazine announces best and worst of 2004
9th November 2004
Blockbusting superhero flick Spiderman 2 cast a web over UK film fans this year and has been voted “Top Movie” of 2004 in a poll of sci-fi fans and experts. According to Future Publishing's SFX magazine, the over-hyped vampire movie Van Helsing smells worse than garlic itself, grabbing worst movie of the year.
The best and worst movie polls were amongst those carried out for a special edition of the UK’s best-selling sci-fi magazine SFX - The Review of 2004 – giving fans and experts alike the chance to have their say on a year in science fiction.
Winning “Top Movie” of 2004 Spiderman 2 managed to finally banish the age-old Hollywood rule that sequels are never as good as the original movie. Surprisingly, despite winning 11 Oscars – the final Lord of the Rings movie, The Return of the King came in at number five in the list. Other movies in the top five included Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Shawn of the Dead and Bubba Ho-Tep, a low-budget American movie that depicts Elvis as an elderly zombie hunter.
Bagging the worst movie of 2004 – The vampire flick Van Helsing was released in July with a fan fare of hype and anticipation, but completely failed to attract audiences and was critically mauled. Beating the Halle Berry stinker, Catwoman into second place, Van Helsing was awarded “Clunker of the Year.”
The best and worst movies of 2004 are amongst the gongs dished out in SFX - The Review of 2004 special issue. Other categories include Buffy The Vampire Slayer spin-off show Angel winning “TV Show of the Year” and the eagerly-awaited Star Wars Trilogy boxset scooping “Best DVD of the Year.”
The 132-page special, is packed with other extra features, including a complete five-season episode guide to every episode of Angel, an exclusive interview with Shaun Of The Dead creator Simon Pegg, a month-by-month look back at the major sci-fi events of 2004, quotes of the year and a whole bunch more.
Mike Lamond is Publisher of SFX magazine:
“Spiderman 2 completely lived up to the pre-release hype and in many ways managed to surpass the sheer ingenuity and freshness of the first movie. Not only did the film genuinely move us all, but it impressed everyone and made us all go ‘wow’ thanks to some fantastic special effects.”
“On the other hand, everyone had big hopes for Van Helsing, it really should have worked as a movie but fails spectacularly. A limp plot and poor acting spoils what could have been a fantastic Victorian James Bond style flick. In the end the movie was little more than special effects pornography – set piece after set piece with no story and all the emotional depth of a soggy biscuit.”
SFX – The Review Of 2004 goes on sale, 10 November, priced £5.99.
